Our heroes travelled together from Deepwater where they’d assembled in order to catch the miscreant Endobar Filch, whom Eddewyn and Raghour had been chasing from island to island and had last been seen heading for Winterhaven with a handful of local ruffians.
On the way they were ambushed by a gang of kobolds, and once at Winterhaven they heard that such attacks have become a much bigger problem of late. They also learned that the local area holds the cave lair of the scaly little monsters; a supposed dragon burial site; and the ruins of Shadowfell Keep, where Endobar was last seen headed for.
And so the brave troupe went forth to delve beneath the ruins of the keep and battled past kobolds, goblins, giant rats, zombies, skeletons and living ooze, taking two prisoners and speaking with the spirit of a fallen knight before deciding to return to Winterhaven to renew their supplies and rest in safety.
Upon returning to Winterhaven the travellers found themselves locked out of the town, as undead skeletons had been rising from their graves and attacking farmers, so they were forced to quell the threat before Lord Padraig would agree to re-open the gates. At the graveyard they found the animating ritual had been performed by Ninaran, an elf who’d been staying at Wrafton’s, under the instruction of someone called Kalarel specifically to kill them!
Resting for a while at Wrafton’s Inn the adventurers enjoyed the hospitality and affections of the grateful locals, and reflected on all they’d learned. Their prisoners had both escaped, Riardon and Cora had left to answer a plea for help from Fallcrest, and they seemed no closer to finding Endobar Filch. BUT, they had cleared out many of the evil denizens of Shadowfell Keep and learned from Sir Keegan’s ghost that dark magic was at work somewhere deep in the dungeon, which they agreed they should do something about. From Valthrun they heard still more, that he believes Shadowfell Keep was built precicely in order to guard the magic portal behind which (if he’s correct) is trapped Deep Ulguru, an ancient and powerful evil. Certainly it’s a strange place for a castle, and judging from the underground chapel it was once guarded by Knights of Bahamut.
Despite a desire to assault the kobold’s cave and defeat the feared Irontooth they’ve heard so much about, the dungeon delvers decided they must unravel the mystery of Shadowfell Keep as soon as possible. So upon returning they worked their way past Terror Runes and zombies to reach the stairs down, where they were met by hobgoblin guards demanding a password. Their hesitation lead one guard to shout “Intruders!”, and battle was joined, with more soldiers joining the fray and unleashing a Deathjump Spider upon them! The melee rages on…
